Drawing final research

Windows of my soul has become one of the names of my ideas for my final in drawing. I have chosen this name because this far I am 75% sure i want to collage images together and that explain the person i am today. While at the same time incorporating me into the piece some how, showing where i wish to be in the world. While at the same time showing that iam still unsure of who i am at this moment. A couple of things I am still sketching out is how i want the collage to be represented. Whether its like notes posted onto a board with pictures or like a faded memory of the events i want to draw. But this is just the first blog to come in my research of finding me and incorporating it into my piece.

Quote Response

"The point is, that every piece of art changes your whole perception of the rest of the world for the rest of your life.
And it's not a joke! And if it doesn't, then it's not art, it's a commodity

After carefully reading and dissecting this quote numerous times I have finally made a decision that I am torn with this statement. At first glance my answer was yes I am agree with this quote, but then after care consideration of all work that I have come across there are some that I believe that were just created. So I furthermore made since of it by breaking it down into lame terms and from that I will give my opinion through what was obtained by the definitions of commodity and dichotomy. Commodity: the article of trade, something of use, advantage, or value. Dichotomy: division into two mutually exclusive opposed or contradictory groups, ex: the contradiction between thought and action. Now from the two I can base my argument from the definition of art being dichotomy of expression and decoration vs. expression through decoration. My comparison may come across as being a bit broad but I will go into detail of what I mean. As I said I had a hard time coming up with a solid answer so hopefully after my description my response comes across as an agreement or disagreement.
Expressive art, here you have art that you easily make a connection with or you take the time to understand. This may be the painting, drawing, sculpture, etc. that at first glance it takes you by surprise specifically I encountered an artist Tehching Hsieh whose work to me was completely and absolutely out of this world and just was not art to me. Specifically I encountered his one year cage piece, how are you telling me this is art? However, after reading up on his work understanding how this work was conveying a message. I allowed myself to strip away all that I knew was art and read deep into what he was expressing. To bring it back to a basic surface there could be a painting of a flower arrangement with a small card in it that reads love john. Just through that small intimate moment the artist have allowed me have that experience with them of emotions varying through love, warmth etc. Through the small moments of clarity through pieces the artist allows the viewer to take in a piece of it and that experience against beliefs at the moment changing perception on specific work for the rest of their life. From art as ambiguous as a Tehching’s cage piece from first glance to something as basic as a flower arrangement. In comparison to expressive art, I am not sure if I have yet come across a specific artist but using common since I am aware there are persons in this category creating art just for mere DECORATION.
Decorative Art, here in my opinion I place artist who glamorize objects to a since where you are happy with its appearance and there it is art. By doing this I am unaware of your perspective, the issue at hand and now the same flower arrangement eliminating the card that say love john  that may have once been made to symbolize a love ones care has just become a painting in a frame for maybe a dinning room. We all have seen it, the drawings of cartoon characters, animating love ones faces, and the list goes on. One may argue isn’t this the same as expressive art it expresses the love of that character, but then I place the same judgment  and argument of yes it could but can we really say that the pieces I have previously stated will change our perspective on life for the rest of our lives. We could simply just call it what it is that are merely attractive and entertaining moments for our eyes forgotten about days later. However, the realistic painting you may have seen of the hands close up bruised horribly placed purposely on his/her lap left to the viewer to complete what it means will change your view on how you read into the small details of a painting from now on, due to now the artist have brought attention to things people often glance but never sit and pay attention to. Or taking something so basic once again as a flower arrangement and now all the flowers have welted and sit on a night stand.
Summing it all up I am not saying expressive art can’t be decorative it absolutely can be. However, I am saying that all art that artist create, even though they wish people take in and appreciate what they have created not every piece of art in the world is life changing. There are some viewed simply for what they are pretty pieces, while others convey messages the viewer wants to remember and compare to other situations which helps them result back to that specific piece. So after all that is said, I can say I believe I disagree with this quote.

Freshman Lectures

Within the last two weeks, i have found the freshman lectures to be quite interesting. Speaking about the guy who worked beneath his grand fathers shop, i was interested in how he took specific memories such as the one from the flying dutchmen and tied them into his works. Giving it more meaning to me, even educating me on the true story of the flying dutchmen while also explainin its relationship to his work. The minature rooms being, i believe a way of symbolizing the home of which the flying dutchmen was looking for. Also i thought it was still nice to see that artist hold on to their youth when he showed us he lovve for trucks. How he recreates and collect them. As in comparison to last weeks when we meet a guy whose art work showed through younger children. Here what interest me was the fact that he himself wasnt taking all the benefit for the childrens work, but was helping to convey a message through the children. By providing them with the knowledge that he posses as an artist , of the specific do's and dont's he was able to create community projects and turn them into art. Such as one example he explained to us how he made the hated subject of math into works of art. By using cordinates and geometric shapes he helped keep teens intrigued with the subject. So much that they were allowed to blow these shapes up and use them as art work to decorate the halls of their schools. Though at first it was hard to figure out how it was considered to be his art, once he explained how it is his love for art and the knowledge provided to the children, that in a way it is their art it all made since. It appeared to me as if he was an art teacher, and the childrens minds were his minature studios. its cool to see how similar yet how different the two artist think. Two weeks ago here was an artist telling us that a studio is most important, it shows who you are, and allows you to get your creative juices flowing. While in the next week here we are again before an artist who tells us yes he has a studio space, but its a means of storage really, and that his studio is out in the community. What i have taken from this is where eveer you are comfortable  is where you should spend your time, its not neccessary to have a studio if thats not where your prize winning art is created.

Ted Tak

The episode of ted talk that i watched was about the Mr.Condom saving Thailand from becoming over populated i believe. It had become so tremendously over populated they had to formulate a problem solver and they resulted to birth control in all its forms. The most interesting part about the birth control method to me was that they got everyone involved. From school teacherrs to board games, etc, giving examples such as with alphabet games that P was for pills C was for condoms etc. Also with the board games you would select a card iam guessing and it would tell you how many spaces to move based upon what you have selected. Such as if you select that mom takes birth control every night you would get to move spaces ahead, in comparison to if you select that your uncle get drunk and doesnt where a condom you have to go back to start. Another interesting part of this episode was that there were people blessing the condoms and pills so that they can properly work without side affects. Children in school begin to blow condoms up taking pictures and the slogan became "A condom is a girls best friend". This episode made the awareness of condoms into a fun activity for the whole city and as they should, the condoms worked and took the population down. In 1974 there was 7 children for a family 3.3% where as in 200 it took it down to 1.5 children 0.5%.So it shows the resolver they choose was the right decision for Thailand.

2D/Drawing work

Freshman Lecture

The week before i missed me the lecture due to a meeting.

Last week freshman lecture was okay, she stressed through out the whole lecture the importance of having your own space.Leading up to saying by having your own space  you will then discover your own style of how to create your work. It was over all okay

My thoughts on the film Persona

Over all the film was interesting to watch, but I think I would appreciate the film more without words. Only because the motion in the film and the interaction of the two characters in the movie told a story by themselves and listening to what they were saying was a little odd. The dialogue between the two ladies, even though one didn’t talk was strange. It never continue about the same topic, it always jumped back and forth.
Now to start from beginning to end speaking on the things I did and didn’t like. When the movie first came on my first reaction was “what the hell”. There was a nail being hammered into someone’s hand and then a small skit was being performed, here we have an actress who decides on her own to become a mute and last but never least a young nurse. All this information thrown onto the viewer within the first 10 minutes of the movie. From that moment on I knew the movie wasn’t going to be in sequence, but strangely it started to act as normal movie that I am use to. The story line begins to unfold, or what I thought was the story then towards the last 30 minutes of the movie chaos. The nurse finds out in some sense the lady of which she has been helping has used her as a study. At this point of the movie I thought the lady would begin to talk, I was wrong the two start to fight in strange ways that confused. To be specific when the nurse cuts herself, and the lady drinks her blood, I’m not quite sure how to take that. Another confusing moment when the two ladies decide I am guessing to pack up and leave the movie ends with only the nurse leaving. So what happened to the other lady?
This movie was so much more then confusing; it basically had no structure to me of what a traditional movie I’ve seen would have. But I digress and can admit even though there were wacky moments there were some scenes of the movie that I enjoyed a lot. But I wish there was a moral to this story so that the two can come together and not only be visually appealing.

Drawing/2D work 1 semester

Beauvais Lyons Article

After going through several of the articles I have realized that I need to try and find more interesting matters, such as a specific topic that will force me to read more about art. I’ve video and performances aren’t one. However, there was one article that got my attention quickly “ Humor at work: Beauvis Lyons at the American Philosophical Society and the Dufala Brothers at Haverford College.” The reason this caught my eye was the way that this man presents himself and his art work the two just don’t match. First he is stated first to be a sober man before the details are told of his humor. He presents himself with a straw hat, bow tie and suit as shown in the picture with a bible placed under his arm a typical church man I would say if I see him. However, then he places a pamphlet in your hand and says “HERE, HAVE SOME PROPAGANDA” let me remind you this is for the proceeding around his display set up. And if that wasn’t enough to catch my eye his work would. The way he depicts animals, he does a kind of Egyptian B.C type appearance distorting animals giving them different qualities and characteristics of fellow animals but in a weird way.
With one of his piece he takes a gorilla as shown in the picture and places it on top of a ducks lower half. But the best part of his work is not just the work alone it’s his final words for the pieces as he walks you through the exhibit quoting the bibles verses, in ways that he believe it fits its context. After reading this article I looked up more of his work to find out a little more about who Beauvais Lyons is a printmaker whose prints display the same things his sculptures display. A fish with a cat’s bottom or a duck with a fish bottom, and the list goes on. The one shocking thing about him is he looks like a typical guy more, I would never believe that he creates the works that he do. Its goes to show in the case of art you can really never judge a book by its cover. I love his works he has now become one of my favorite artist.

Type project

In my foundations computer class we were given the assignment to create a non representation
representational, and emotional piece using only type. Above are my works of abstract pretty circles, a carrot, and lips.

Freshman Lecture

One word "Confused", I was confused I think he was confused. However, he knew one thing that your computer should not act as your studio space. There was no way i payed attention, because after i realized that he was unsure with his presentation i drifted off into my own world.

Image Usage (Computer Class)

After watching the two clips on the different perspectives of access and the usage of others property my feelings towards the two were mixed. When summing up my views of the minors identity being used for advertisement without her awareness, or approval I felt that she should feel used because of the way that her image was placed in content. While also she should be a little eangry, not for money purposes, but for the reasons that if she would have never came across the image she would have never known what her picture was being used for. With this situation however I think she lucked up because they could have used it for X-rated usage. While on the other hand with the gentleman speaking on taking traditional images and videos using it to convey a different message it doesn’t really bother me that much. Even though I believe the same argument can arise, what if the picture was used for a disturbing message instead of a meaningful message.

Freshman Lecture...

When I first walked into the freshman lecture, being as though this was the first one I have attended I was not as attentive as I should have been of the information that he was providing us with. However, I was able to zone into a point I thought as being interesting the questions of art, what is it, why there is no proper way to give a grade to art, and why artist don’t taken bubbled in test. Often iam asked the same questions he spoke about, of how do I get graded for art. There is no rubric and there is not set formula you must go by, but the way you convey your message and the craftsmanship determine it all. Even though to me art is done with a set of guidelines and formulas, such as your emotions how your marks reveal that and the way you compose your piece it is not stated that every time a piece is done it must be done a specific way, abstract or representational. Bringing me to the second question that he talked about why artist don’t have bubbled test. How do you test a whole class on their work when the emotion, fantasy, or messages in the pieces are not all the same? Unlike math, English and Science, Art cannot be depicted on yes and no or right and wrong answers, because who are you to tell someone their emotions are the wrong answer.
In just a few moments he answered questions that I never had the correct wording to inform someone of why Art was so much different than any other course. Now I am able to speak about the difference with more the typical response of because we’re unique.

Walking through the city

Walking through the city

While walking through the city to find interesting pictures, i found myself more interested in the streets apperance. As compared to the streets a normal tourist would visit i walked down graffiti streets. Finding murals and block parties, or paintings on the sides of walls done by children. Over rall it was a different view then i was use to we have few murals in my neighborhood, and how the schools were gated in was amazing to me. It was a scary yet adventurous walk through alleys and the back streets that very few freshmans know of other then the main streets.

My First Memory

My first memory consists of me and koolaid. I can remember being at least 9 or 10 years old and it was during the summer time of course, in my neighborhood we had a  candy lady. This lady made the best freeze pops in the world they were in styrofoam containers and it was simply frozen koolaid. However the best part about the freezy was that even after you was done with all the koolaid the styrofoam would hold onto the flavor, so i would chew on koolaid styrofoam. PLEASE dont knock the idea and the concept of koolaid styrofoam until you have tried it. And my friends thats the end to my first memory!
