Beauvais Lyons Article

After going through several of the articles I have realized that I need to try and find more interesting matters, such as a specific topic that will force me to read more about art. I’ve video and performances aren’t one. However, there was one article that got my attention quickly “ Humor at work: Beauvis Lyons at the American Philosophical Society and the Dufala Brothers at Haverford College.” The reason this caught my eye was the way that this man presents himself and his art work the two just don’t match. First he is stated first to be a sober man before the details are told of his humor. He presents himself with a straw hat, bow tie and suit as shown in the picture with a bible placed under his arm a typical church man I would say if I see him. However, then he places a pamphlet in your hand and says “HERE, HAVE SOME PROPAGANDA” let me remind you this is for the proceeding around his display set up. And if that wasn’t enough to catch my eye his work would. The way he depicts animals, he does a kind of Egyptian B.C type appearance distorting animals giving them different qualities and characteristics of fellow animals but in a weird way.
With one of his piece he takes a gorilla as shown in the picture and places it on top of a ducks lower half. But the best part of his work is not just the work alone it’s his final words for the pieces as he walks you through the exhibit quoting the bibles verses, in ways that he believe it fits its context. After reading this article I looked up more of his work to find out a little more about who Beauvais Lyons is a printmaker whose prints display the same things his sculptures display. A fish with a cat’s bottom or a duck with a fish bottom, and the list goes on. The one shocking thing about him is he looks like a typical guy more, I would never believe that he creates the works that he do. Its goes to show in the case of art you can really never judge a book by its cover. I love his works he has now become one of my favorite artist.
